I recently came across a situation with my B450-based motherboard. Initially, I only used SATA drives, but after a couple of years I upgraded to an NVMe SSD. Everything seemed fine at first. However, after another year, I realized I needed more storage. I replaced the existing drive with a SATA SSD and connected it to the nearest accessible port. It didn’t show up in the BIOS settings. I began troubleshooting by swapping out one of my old drives for the new one—it worked. Then I removed all drives and tested each SATA port using both the faulty cable and the new ones. It turned out two out of six ports were non-functional. I felt worried, thinking my motherboard might be failing, especially since I needed it for work and couldn’t afford a replacement right away. I decided to search online about known issues with my specific model’s SATA controller. That’s when I discovered that using the M.2 slot actually disables those two ports. It made me think about what if the BIOS labeled those ports as disabled instead of unused. It would be much better if the interface simply marked them as inactive rather than dead. If you’re testing motherboards in a lab, it would be wise to verify how accurate the BIOS data is. It’s time for manufacturers to invest more effort into improving BIOS reporting beyond just basic visuals!

Sure, it would be helpful to include a note or indicator in the BIOS regarding this. Many people skip reading the manual, particularly once they've built a few devices and stop checking them.
