Consider Asus TUF B450 Pro Gaming or MSI B450 Tomahawk Max for your motherboard selection.
I chose to replace my i5 6600 with a Ryzen 7 3700X. Since I’m an Asus fan, the Asus TUF B450 Pro Gaming was my top pick—I considered the Strix model but it had many bad reviews. The MSI B450 Tomahawk is getting lots of positive feedback. About the Asus TUF B450, do they have a 3rd generation ready BIOS?
The MSI board features improved VRM (the DC-DC converter that feeds power to the CPU), along with a better heatsink for the VRM, which enhances overclocking capabilities and keeps things cooler overall. It also includes bios flashback support, enabling BIOS updates without needing a CPU installed in the socket. The MAX series models come with larger BIOS sizes and are manufactured with Ryzen 3rd generation support. In contrast, the Asus board lacks this feature, meaning older boards may require a Ryzen 1st or 2nd generation processor just for BIOS updates.
I purchased the Asus TUF B450 Pro Gaming mATX board a few weeks ago to use with a 3900X. I selected this model because it was solid and there weren’t many mATX options with quick shipping. I haven’t encountered any problems overclocking the RAM or CPU, especially given the board’s price. The only issue is that the BIOS wasn’t updated to support the latest Ryzen versions. If you choose this board, reach out to the seller ahead of time and request an update. For those with older Ryzen chips, consider asking friends to lend their CPUs so you can handle the BIOS upgrade yourself. The B450 Tomahawk Max offers a BIOS flashback feature that simplifies the process, though I personally don’t like its appearance.
Examining the TUF B450 Pro reveals it offers solid value and quality. While a 2700X might suit me better, I initially aimed for the 3700X, though its cost gap is significant—over 40% more for similar performance gains. The lower power needs make it appealing, but I’ll wait for a price drop on the 3700X so updating the BIOS won’t be an issue.
