Consider a suitable motherboard for your needs.
Hello everyone. I'm considering swapping out my motherboard. I currently own an ASUS ROG Strix Z690e, but it doesn't meet my needs. I often face boot issues and strange error codes, which I've already tried fixing. I'm leaning toward brands like MSI or Gigabyte. I don't mind RGB, just keep it simple. I need something with a debug LED and at least three M.2 slots. My current setup uses a 12900K, so I want a model that supports it. I'm aiming to stay under $400 but willing to go up to $500 if necessary. Any suggestions? Thanks!
If you choose Z690, MSI remains a strong pick due to their superior memory layout compared to Gigabyte's offerings. For Z790 models—essential for supporting four memory DIMMs at decent speeds—it becomes less critical since both options perform well and significantly outperform the Z690 lineup. The Z690 Force offers solid value at around $300, packed with necessary features. The Z690 Carbon is essentially a black variant of the standard board. Unified X and Unify are also commendable boards, with Unify-X boasting one of the top memory designs for LGA 1700 (surpassing later Apex and Dark K|NGP|N models), though they sit above the $400 mark. If you need a debug LED (likely referring to the 7-segment display on the board rather than the CPU, DRAM, VGA, or BOOT LEDs), these are your main choices in that price range. Z790 Master and Taichi models exist but approach the $500 threshold; they excel mainly in four-DIMM setups, support eATX standards, and come with case compatibility challenges.
Opt for any budget board, the Z690A should suffice unless you require more than two USB-C ports. Use a single unit for your Mini PCIe adapter. I plan to follow suit since high-end debug chips cost over 50 dollars and some marketing claims don’t match real performance. Lower-end Z690 models lack a compatible postcode, so spending 150 dollars on a premium chip won’t help much. A modest 10 dollars is more than enough for the value.
