I'm quite scattered here. After deciding I've found something, I quickly turn it into an opinion piece—it's not great. To be honest, I only know a bit about CPUs for virtualization, mainly that more cores help and having enough RAM is important. This is for a lab setup. I was thinking about running four Windows 10 VMs at a time for everyday use. Any ideas? I was considering a Ryzen 5900X recently. I want to stay under $350. Appreciate your help!

It’s not that complicated right now—currently hosting four 16-core servers on a R5 3600. You might want to check out the second-hand CPUs nearby. 5700G, 5700X, and 5800X models are pretty common.

Photoshop requires a GPU and might not perform well in default setups like Proxmox. You'll likely need a 5950x/5900x display. What about the rest of your system?

I’ll take bad samples too. My goal is to design the rest of the system based on the CPU. After selecting it, adding lots of high-end RAM makes the rest straightforward.

It’s an unusual approach. Consider RAM, CPU, and motherboard as a single package and decide your overall budget. Some systems offer more affordable RAM options. Also, AM4 requires a GPU to display video on certain processors. What’s the total budget for the setup? How much storage and RAM will you require?

No video output at all without a GPU on the AM4 chip without an APU. Likely to achieve 5900x resolution with 64GB of RAM (speed isn't a major concern).
