Is this connector suitable for the location? The design of the connector differs from the plug, and there doesn’t appear to be another compatible option. On the opposite side, the connector fits the plug, but the other end won’t fit into the PSU.

Use PCIe instead of a CPU auxiliary power cable for better efficiency and performance.

Certainly, the designs on the connector versus the cable differ slightly, likely to ensure compatibility. It's typical for the cable to feature a unique 'odd' form, especially since the board's connector is square-shaped.

The cable shown is the CPU cable. Using a PCIe cable, the third end plug would connect to the PCIe slot on the motherboard.

Check if you need the 8-pin cable or the PCIe 6+2 connector. For the PCIe cable, determine the location of the third terminal.

Ensure the CPU 8-pin connector is inserted into its corresponding 8-pin socket. Avoid inserting a PCIe cable into that area—it will disable the hidden magic smoke function on the motherboard.

The image shows a connector that is an 8-pin EPS type, but its pin arrangement differs from the usual design. This change was made to enable splitting the connector in two. The split exists because some older boards and budget motherboards only support 4-pin connectors, and these boards often have extra parts near the header, making it impractical to insert the full 8-pin version halfway. As a result, the 4-pin version is secured with a keyed header, allowing you to use the left side of this connector on compatible boards. Refer to the link provided for more details.

It would vary based on your motherboard and power supply unit, but in general I’m leaning against it. Cables and connectors are built to match precisely; otherwise it could result in wear and eventual damage.
