Connection speed remains at or below 13mbps
I previously averaged around 35-45mbps on our service from charter. Before the new year, while downloading a game, the speed increased to about 75mbps and above, then fell to a maximum of 13.75mbps across all platforms—Xbox, Steam, Epic. Now achieving that speed feels great, and Charter claims it can't identify any issues. I've stayed connected via Ethernet using CAT6 throughout, without adding any routers or modems.
Discuss your performance concerns with Xbox or Steam? What outcome appears on speedtest.net for your PC? Is it measured over Ethernet or Wi-Fi? How many devices are linked to your home network? Do speeds vary throughout the day? What upload and download rates does Charter advertise? Are there any data limits (e.g., up to X GB/month, then per-GB charges)? Internet speed is reported as total usage. For instance, with 75Mbps available, if your sister streams Netflix (2Mbps), your sibling studies (1Mbps), and your dad downloads files (10Mbps), your test might show around 62Mbps. Try disconnecting everyone from the internet and retesting to observe changes. Some routers/modems display real-time throughput graphs for live bandwidth tracking. Based on my experience working with a small ISP, Xbox and PlayStation speed checks often aren't reliable. I recommend using speedtest.net or built-in browser tests for better accuracy. Regarding game downloads, speeds depend more on the server than your connection itself—your 200/20 link can show inconsistent results (e.g., 20MBps vs 2MBps). These variations usually stem from factors beyond your network. Let me know if you need further clarification.
Did you reset the router by disconnecting it, clearing its cache? On Windows, you can also refresh your network connections via this link: https://computing.cs.cmu.edu/desktop/ip-renew
Steam, an epic platform, displays speed in megabytes per second. Your internet connection is 75 megabits per second, with 1 megabyte equaling 8 megabits.
I typically browse the web when others aren't online. The speed test indicates 111mbps download and 11 mbps upload, but we haven't altered our service or package. We've restarted both the router and modem multiple times. If I'm downloading at 13mbps, the download drops to just 5mbps and upload nearly stops, while ping jumps from 25-60 to 2500.
That is actually quite right. If you have 111 mbps and you are downloading at 13 MBps you are using 104 mbps, 13x8=104mbps, 111-104=7mbps!
