I've been having trouble with my download speed after getting the computer. I have a 500mbps network, but when I run a speed test on Ookla it shows only a slight improvement or drop. When I start downloading games on Steam or Epic Games, the speed drops to around 40-50 mbps, and it never goes higher. Recently, plugging in my laptop via Ethernet gave me 500 to 530 mbps, but I’m not sure why that happened. I checked Steam for data limits, but it wasn’t there. Any suggestions would be really helpful.
This confuses everyone sometimes, but keep in mind the difference between megabits and megabytes. Since there are 8 bits in a byte, 50 MBps equals 400 Mbps. By default, Steam displays megabytes, while tools like Speedtest.net show megabits. Steam’s reported download rates can also depend on your PC’s ability to unpack the data and the servers’ transmission speed.
