Hi there, I'm a volunteer at the local emergency service and also handle communications. I just finished setting up the server rack. All network connections inside the buildings are connected via Ethernet jacks to the switch. I've properly connected them to a patch panel and cleaned up the rack. My main question is: can I link two modems or routers to the switch so that if one fails, we still have internet access? We currently have two connections—one from Telstra's business wireless router/modem and another from an Inet wireless modem/router. I did some quick online research but found limited results.

You should use a different router that supports failover, then link both modems to it so it can switch to the second connection when the first fails. Pfsense is a good option for this.

It varies based on whether it's a Layer 2 or Layer 3 switch. For a Layer 3 switch, you can establish two routes and apply administrative distances to prioritize one path. If that option isn't present, traffic will be directed through the alternative route.

The modem might indeed be functional, but the internet link is currently inactive. I don’t know if any device can recognize this issue.

I think setting admin distances on the static routes for the default gateways should cause the system to switch to the second gateway when the first isn't reachable. EDIT: Just to note, this assumes the switch supports layer 3 routing.

Hey team, I’ll check the server and switch. Sadly, the person who managed the network and set everything up has left and moved out. They didn’t leave any passwords or instructions behind. I’ve sent them an email and a few messages but haven’t gotten a response. I’ll attempt to reset the password now.

I explored a solution for handling one of my problems with two routers. The goal was to implement load balancing so that if a connection fails, the other continues without users noticing. Additionally, I needed to address access issues with a password-protected PC where the administrator hasn’t responded to messages. I’m looking for alternatives since changing settings now would reset everything.
