I relocated to a new location last month and the internet has become unreliable. The current setup makes online games difficult to play, happening unpredictably throughout the day. When I contacted my ISP (Comcast), they repeatedly asked me to restart the modem, but their assistance was limited. I attempted to reduce connected devices and even switched to a different modem, yet the issue persists. I’m feeling frustrated and unsure if there’s a solution. Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated.

Determine whether the issue involves a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN), then identify the specific cause.

Check the router, then the gateway, and finally the first external host in a tracert/traceroute to your preferred service. This should provide more details about whether the problem is local or external. Were any packets missing in your SpeedTest results?

Discovered via trace route that Comcast is routing pings through IPs on the east coast. I’m on the west coast, so the path looks like: Me → Seattle → New Jersey → New York → California. A technician will be dispatched tomorrow as the agent on the line was unclear about the situation.

We operate individual devices through a VPN, yet not the entire network. The device used for this verification isn't even configured with a VPN.

Network problem on the outside? No action possible except wait. Is your ISP DNS in use?

Routing issues might need adjustment by BGP experts. DNS translates domain names into IP addresses, like converting google.com to 8.8.8.8. If your DNS points to incorrect or distant servers—for example, a New York load balancer for NY Google—consider switching DNS providers. Options include 1.1.1.1 (CloudFlare), 8.8.8.8 (Google), or 4.4.4.4 (possibly .3). Run ipconfig /flushdns to clear cache and test again.

Get used to this situation. Comcast is hiring tech support salespeople. "Sorry, your service isn’t working. Want to add Xfinity Mobile to your account?" I tried checking the Google DNS servers to see if it helped. Not sure how to do that on their gateway. Unclear if you need to use the app or the firmware. My family doesn’t rent their gateway. I agree with @Forbidden Wafer – this isn’t something tech can fix. Routing problems will likely persist in the data center, and you’re not permitted to contact those teams. They might resolve it eventually.
