Apologies if this was addressed elsewhere, or if it wasn’t too complicated. I’m struggling to link my work laptop with domain access to my home media server—it’s not working as expected. When using Windows 8 and 10, I could connect to the home network without issues, but now the media computer is asking for different credentials. I know domain settings aren’t universal outside the domain, yet on Windows 11 I can’t connect without them either. The media server is set to private with network discovery enabled, which should allow sharing. I mapped storage easily on other devices in the same workgroup, but connecting from my domain laptop causes problems. I’m not sure where to start, and Advanced Sharing seems limited. Do you have any tips or articles that could help? Thanks!

The domain controller might have configured Administration Templates, limiting access to certain resources. You may attempt using the net use command via the command line. This will enforce a specific username and password when connecting to a network share. Use net use <server> /user:<username> <password>. If the command succeeds, you should be able to access the share.

Is the device compelled to join a VPN for accessing network assets? In a large organization, the system will restrict access and cut off all connections except the corporate network, disabling any other networking until a VPN is established and traffic routes through it. If this applies, you might bypass it, but I wouldn’t allow work equipment to interact with your personal devices on the same network—they could be tracked by monitoring all data flow. For my own safety, I often place work gear on a separate guest network to prevent unauthorized contact.
