You're facing a common issue in shared dorm environments. Since you have only one Ethernet port and need to connect both your laptop and desktop, using the desktop as a bridge is possible but requires careful setup. Your desktop having two ports makes it easier to manage the connection. Sharing your desktop drive with your laptop through this path is feasible if you configure proper network settings and permissions. Just ensure you follow your dorm's rules about switches and ensure all devices are properly connected.

Obtain a switch quickly. You can distribute a folder in Windows effortlessly, search it online, and access it via folder properties. Set up a virtual switch on a PC.

Routers are permitted, but the wireless must be disabled. Ideally, I prefer avoiding a router since I own an affordable one, though it restricts my internet speed to 100 Mbps even on a gigabit connection.

They act as switches and convert an Ethernet port into a 5-port setup.

I use a Belkin surf wireless router there, but you need to set it up to disable WiFi.

Switches might be banned in the dorms to prevent safety hazards, reduce fire risks, and maintain a clean environment.
