Hi, I’m checking if my router can handle a Steam Link. My TP-Link TD-W8960N is rated at 300 Mbps, but Steam forums suggest it’s more like 50 Mbps. I’ve heard most users prefer AC WiFi or a wired setup. Since my computer is far from the living room, I can connect via cable, but I’m worried about performance. I also won’t be able to return the device if it fails because I don’t reside in the US. Have anyone tried using the Link with a similar router?
It might not be a good idea unless you have a wired connection or AC power. Expect high latency and a tough gaming experience. Even with wired, performance drops noticeably on Steam Link.
300 Mbps performs adequately at 5.2-5.8GHz yet suffers significant packet loss on 2.4GHz. Even with a budget dual-band router, you'd likely get smooth performance unless you're passing through many obstacles. I’m aware the TP-LINK TD-W8980 can handle it, but for the cost, consider a more affordable AC1200 model paired with an ADSL2+ modem that matches your carrier’s specs.
