They weren't needed before gigabit Ethernet was introduced. @OP you'll need to connect the links and add some extra tricks to make it function, but it should be possible. Search for a guide specific to your Windows setup.

Assuming budget is limited means no additional devices are needed. It seems the ability to link two computers via standard Ethernet might have changed recently. Reflecting on my past, I bought specialized gear 15 years ago to study networking but struggled to make them communicate. Eventually, I understood it was due to needing a switch, router, or crossover cable.
