I don’t understand much about this, but I’m guessing the router is likely the point where the internet from the street first reaches your home. Connecting there would probably offer the least delay in theory, though I’m not completely certain.

It doesn't matter which device is connected to the switch or router. Since the switch supports gigabit speeds, there will be no variation in performance.
