Hi, I'm setting up a rig using a Rog Strix B550 F after the MSI B550 Tomahawk didn't work. I noticed the Rog Strix requires an extra 8+4 pin connector for the CPU. I plan to use a 5900X iGPU and don’t need the extra pin, but even if I wanted to connect it, I’m unsure how. Since my PSU doesn’t have a single 4-pin connector, I have two power cables labeled "CPU." I think I can connect one with all eight pins and another with just four. Can I do that safely without damaging the CPU?

This design allows connectors to be divided into two separate 4-pin units. One unit stays intact for the 8-pin connector, while the other can be split and used with a 4-pin adapter. The remaining part can be discarded as cable. Your CPU will receive extra power than necessary, which is fine.

You won’t require the additional boost from the extra four-pin connector. It simplifies cable management and keeps your setup tidier. Stick with the eight-pin option—it delivers more power than necessary for your CPU. The extra pins are meant for serious overclocking, but they won’t damage your processor.

Extra pins offer little value, especially if you push the limits daily. Even with a solid phase change cooler running smoothly at low temps, an additional 8-pin connection remains irrelevant. Most people won’t upgrade to something like a unified X or Aorus master. The idea of adding more pins is mostly for marketing purposes and often causes confusion. It’s unnecessary and can mislead others.
