Connect laptop and desktop using Windows
I’m preparing for university next year and need ways to connect my laptop and desktop seamlessly. I want to code and access files from both devices without being online. Besides remote desktop, can I set up a single user with an identical desktop that links everything between my laptop and desktop? I’ll use the desktop in my dorm and the laptop for in-person classes.
Mostly there weren’t laptops built that way before now. You could insert a SATA drive into an expansion bay, but I haven’t encountered that setup since my P35X.
The only solution is to use OneDrive with your student Office 365 free plan, ensuring files stay in sync across both devices. If you have a Windows account linked on both systems, you're set. Windows also shares certain settings to make your laptop feel like part of your main desktop. All programs must be installed on both devices; otherwise, consider Remote Desktop as an alternative. Make sure you have a reliable internet connection for it to function properly. Without internet, remote access isn't possible. If you choose Remote Desktop, use a strong password to protect your system online. Automated attacks may begin if there are many failed login attempts, which you can monitor in Event Viewer.
