The setup should work with a USB headset if both devices support 7.1 channel audio. You don’t need the 3.5 mm jack unless your headset only uses that connection.

Plugging in via USB removes built-in audio, leaving only the internal soundcard in your headphones. @Electronics Wizardy: you were quicker.

I won’t use the 7.1 trick, will I? That means it won’t match the same audio codec.

You can continue using version 7.1, but it won’t utilize the audio chipset on your board. Many headphones featuring 7.1 sound are just marketing tactics; you can handle positional audio entirely in software.
