You're experiencing issues with your Xfce desktop on an old Ubuntu system. The "horizontal mirror" setting is likely causing the screen distortion you're seeing. Since you have access to an installation disk, you can restore your display settings without losing data. Simply boot from the installation media and follow the on-screen instructions to reset the display configuration.

Obtain a Linux live CD or USB, start in the live setup, attach the desktop’s OS partition. Edit the configuration file to activate the required setting, apply the changes, and restart into Ubuntu Xfce.

Each time I attempt to launch the live desktop from a CD, it redirects me to a command-line interface instead of opening the standard desktop GUI.

I’m not quite sure how to explain this. It usually works better with a Live CD that includes a Desktop Environment. Have you tried this link? http://www.lxle.net/

Checked for recent kernel updates; it seems your display manager might be malfunctioning. What manager are you running?

You installed Xfce on top of Ubuntu and chose a horizontal mirrored display. Initially, you expected it to revert after a short time, similar to Windows 7 behavior, but you realized Ubuntu Xfce doesn’t support that feature.
