I'm having trouble with the password entry. I can press Enter normally, but it keeps showing an error about needing printable characters.

Restart the OS the switch uses and attempt again. If the problem persists, it may relate to a Putty configuration issue requiring a fresh installation.

I realized I wasn’t doing well. I managed to enter a password, but PuTTy didn’t show it properly while I typed.

Glad you worked it out on your own. That's actually extremely common for security to now show anything, especially in enterprise networking gear.

You frequently encounter this on Linux/Unix systems, especially when discussing security by rickeo. It can be frustrating when you make a mistake in the middle of typing and don’t remember where you left off—though you can often use the backspace key to erase everything and start over.

It's a late reply, but most Linux systems hide the password for safety.
