I recently purchased an MSI B450 Tomahawk Max. With Zen 3 on the horizon and knowing it won’t work with this model, should I return it or keep it? Also, since I’m not planning a CPU upgrade soon—I have a Ryzen 5 2600X and don’t stream or do heavy computing—I think it’s fine for now. Still, having the chance to upgrade later would be nice. The price for a 570 or a future motherboard isn’t worth it right now. Thanks for any advice, especially for the concerned person.
If you receive the item and receive a complete refund, I’d choose option X570, though it may cost a little more. If not, you should wait for the B550 model. Is this B450 board swapping with an AM4 motherboard?
My suggestion is, well, it's better to be patient. Use it until it breaks or can't keep up with your needs. That's how I approach upgrades. Your system is still fairly good—not the most advanced, but still decent.
Unless you intend to replace the CPU within the next couple of years, it's not advisable. By 2022, entirely new CPUs, motherboard slots, DDR5 support, and other components will be introduced, making older systems incompatible—so upgrading is likely necessary regardless.
Consider returning the item instead of upgrading to B450. Your current B350 board is fine. You might be able to purchase a new one when you replace your CPU.
