Computer switched to a new motherboard and started up. Temperatures seem odd—should I reinstall Windows?
I recently switched from the 9700K to the 7700X. It started up with Windows, but temperatures keep fluctuating between 40 and 70 even when idle. The fans seem to oscillate erratically, and the whole system feels unstable. Could a fresh Windows installation resolve this? Is my Noctua nh-12 causing the issue, or should I upgrade? Might it be related to being a dual-core processor? I’d prefer to keep what I have now, but if a clean install is necessary, I’ll go ahead. Thank you.
The 7000 series is performing exceptionally well. The U12 struggles to match its speed, which explains the rising temperatures. If you test Cinebench, what results do you see?
I owned a 7700x for two years and it moved quite a bit with temperature changes—that’s normal behavior. The Noctua NH-12 works fine but you’ll need to tweak the fan curve. This CPU is built to maintain a 95°C target and run continuously at that point. It’s unusual, I know, but that’s just how they’re engineered. You can’t directly compare AM5 to any other CPU design available today. Look into these resources for more details.
It's all about keeping things under 95°C for optimal performance. The CPU handles temperature fluctuations well, so I adjust fan speeds accordingly—lower speeds until around 94°C, then ramp up to full power for cooling. This keeps noise down while maintaining speed. With my 7700X and overclocked 9800X3D, I set the fan to a steady 30% until it hits 94°C, then switch to 100% for maximum efficiency. Adjusting the cooler’s fan to its highest setting without making it loud helps with quiet operation. Even at 88°C during games, it's normal for this setup. You can tweak PBO and Curve Optimizer slightly for a bit more speed with a small voltage drop. If you're curious about fine-tuning, just enable those features and tweak the numbers. The upgrade from 9900k to 7700X was worth it—enjoy the performance!
Thanks! I'm excited to give it a shot once I have the opportunity.
