Computer Build i5 6600K
I'm setting up my PC for the first time and wondering if there are any mistakes or improvements I could make.
If you're staying with Intel, it makes sense to opt for the i5 7600k and a Z270 MB. It's the latest technology. However, based on your current setup, an i5 6600k should work fine on a Z270 MB. It wouldn't be wise to switch the other way around, like using an i5 7600k on a Z170 MB, since the motherboard might not support the right BIOS, making everything difficult to use.
I own the i5 6600k, which is a solid CPU. I wonder why you aren’t getting the i5 7600k or a 12GB RAM module? Or have you considered a different Ryzen configuration?
The Ryzen 1600 or 1600x both sit at comparable prices, and the motherboards are relatively affordable. Also, the cooler you chose works well with Ryzen systems. Having six cores and six threads offers more flexibility for future tasks compared to the four cores with no threads on the 6600k or 7600k. That extra power lets you handle more things simultaneously. Just a thought.
If gaming is your main goal, Intel remains the best choice. It delivers higher frame rates and supports overclocking better.
I’m planning to save for a Ryzen build, but I’ll be cautious about rushing into it.
Be honest with me, my current PC uses an AMD processor and stopped working after a year... I chose Intel instead. I mainly play games on it, so I haven’t thought about getting an i5 7600K or a Z270MB. I’m new to building PCs and not very sure what I’m doing, so I’m just following what I see online.
