Hey everyone, I have recently bought a rtx 3070 and replaced my 2070. Now I realized that I had been running a single pcie cable to the card (6pin & 6+2pin split). I read that you souldn't do this specially with 2 8pin cards. So I wanted to change this situation but here comes my problem. I have a box full of cables from a corsair RM750X but it's not from my PSU but my brother's. We both have a RM750x but mine is quite a bit older (2016 I think) and his is 2019. 1. Are these cables compatible? The cable I am using looks different than the ones in the box 2. Is it worth the risk changing the setup if I don't run into any issues? Are there any risks? Update: So after my PC ran like a charm yesterday after installing the rtx 3070, today it would crash minutes after booting (loosing display signal and rebooting). I installed the second cable after checking Corsair's compatibility chart and now the PC is working again. I have run extensive tests such as Furmark to check stability and no issues so far. they don't always match up. The main goal is to identify the manufacturing date of each PSU. With that detail, you can determine which cable set each unit requires. For example, if you own a CX 750M and a CX 750F RGB, both use Corsairs 'Type 4' cables, so they work together. Look up the year for each PSU and check online to confirm the cable type they use—if they match, they're compatible.
It may stem from issues with multi-rail PSUs. The problem isn't usually the cable wire but rather how multiple PCIe power cables connect to different rails. A setup with multiple rails probably won’t deliver full wattage from just one rail. If you have a single-rail PSU, it should work fine.
With a multimeter and some knowledge, you can connect the cable to the power source and verify the voltage at each pin. Alternatively, opting for the correct cables is a safer choice. I’d avoid any risk—only spent $100 on SSD drives to learn the basics.
I’d just switch to a completely new PSU, truth be told. 2016 is piling up too many issues. I’m not fully committed to the pre ATX3.0 750W model—it would still work for a 3070 anyway. 3060 sounds fine, but 3080 is possible though. 3070 is just a guess. I’ll post about the ATX3.0 750 and it should be okay.
After installing the RTX 3070 yesterday, my PC performed exceptionally but began crashing shortly after startup. After replacing the second cable per Corsair's guidelines, it has stabilized. I've completed thorough tests like Furmark without encountering problems so far. Appreciate your feedback all!
