You're looking to add a GPU to your Dell OptiPlex 3050 setup for gaming. The RX 6400 is a solid option, but you mentioned insufficient power from your current PSU (180W). You're considering a 240W PSU and wondering if it will support the GPU. It's important to verify the total power requirements of your system before purchasing. Make sure the new PSU can handle both your CPU, GPU, and any other components.

Consider doing it. Is there a reason the 180W isn't sufficient after all? Those older i5s usually don’t exceed 60W, and PCIe slots can only push a GPU up to about 75W—so around 135W total. That should be enough for your HDDs and fans. I double-checked, and AMD says the typical board power for the 6400 is only 53W, meaning it draws even less than that.

Reject the advice from manufacturers like AMD and nVidia, as they provide values meant for general use rather than specific systems. The graphics card will use about 50 watts during gaming. Your computer’s power supply can deliver up to 180 watts overall—your i5 6500 might draw 50-60 watts, the motherboard around 10 watts, keeping the total well within limits.

The power rating shouldn't be a concern. But note that this setup limits the card to PCIe 3.0 x8, which may slow things down. In certain titles it might go unnoticed, while in others it could cut frame rates by up to 20% or more versus a PCIe 4.0 system. https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-r...ng/28.html If you locate a GTX 1650 that fits the Optiplex case, it could be a more cost-effective choice.

Thank you. I intended to include 1650, though the Dell only accommodates one slot card. The only GTX 1650 I located was the 2-slot version.
