Comparison of MSI Pro B760m-A and B660m-A models with WiFi and DDR4 support
I noticed the two mobo models differ in their VRM configurations, curious about their performance differences as I consider purchasing one for my setup. They match in price locally and stay near my budget if other options exist at the same cost. My focus is on productivity, gaming (1080p), video editing, and graphics design. I’ll pair them with the old I5 12400 and RTX3070. Additionally, I’m adding a 2x8GB Crucial Ballistix CL16 RAM.
I understand they use various heatsinks, but their VRMs should be quite similar overall. The main distinctions I can easily spot are the heatsinks themselves, the RGB headers, and where the front panel connectors sit. It seems like a simple choice between them, almost like flipping a coin—whichever feels better. Based on what I know, the B760 model is likely to support faster BIOS updates. I might also look into other motherboard choices. For example, the B760M PG Riptide can handle overclocking of the 12400 chip you’re planning, offering solid performance boosts without a huge price increase compared to the B760M-A. Unless you need DDR5 upgrades, it probably won’t cost much more, though that could be worthwhile if you plan to double your RAM and sell the old board.
Based on what you observed and read, the B660 features an 8+1 while the newer B760 has a 12+1+1 configuration. I'm curious about how these differences will affect performance. You're right to consider opting for the more recent model for better support. However, the price for DDR5 RAM is quite steep compared to DDR4, which could strain your budget—especially if it pushes you over your limits. There are still other motherboard options that match similar performance levels. Thanks again!
Where did you see that? Comparing photos of the boards they have the exact same 12+1+1 setup. Besides, even if it was different, the B660M-A Pro can run 8P core chips without overheating assuming there's mild airflow over the board, so the B760M-A Pro having a bigger VRM would only help.
