Comparison of Memory Controller architectures: Raptor Lake and Zen 4.
No one has created both platforms with the ability to comment here. You're curious about how the base specs for DDR5 on Raptor Lake (DDR5 5600) versus Zen 4 (DDR5 5200) affect memory performance. It looks like the memory architecture seems optimized better for Raptor Lake.
Theoretically Raptor Lake probably has the advantage just based on historical precedent. AMD is still the red headed step child in the industry so I expect XMP speeds to rise faster than EXPO. Currently the difference isn't that large and doesn't really matter. I don't really see it being a big deal in the future either, but I do see Intel coming out slightly ahead. The whole point is kinda stupid anyways though. Threadripper has 8 channels of ddr4 for example. If we really wanted to improve ram performance one of the things we could do would be to add more channels even to ddr5. That's actually one of the gains of ddr5, it's a 64 bit bus vs a 32bit for ddr4 so it's kinda like having more channels in a way. At some point one of the companies is gonna make the power move and have crazy amounts of ram channels on a consumer board, we had three channels as far back as X58 on ddr3 and quad channel as far back as x79 on ddr3 well over a decade ago. Limiting to dual channel on consumer boards is just a choice for now... They could change it one day.
