A link speed is determined by the wireless client and AP through factors like local congestion, distance, supported channels, and techniques such as channel bonding. Achieving 600Mbps on 2.4GHz requires precise conditions. For 2.4GHz networks, expect limited bandwidth compared to higher speeds. Most devices at this frequency are IoT or older electronics. A 50Mbps connection on a first-gen iPad Air is more than enough for typical tasks. CPU performance can affect VPN speeds based on encryption methods used.

I maximized the available connection by turning on the 5GHz router antenna, achieving up to 83mbps. Seems your iPad is still quite capable.
