Comparison of Dell precision 7760 with Quadro RX A3000 and A4000 models
Hello everyone!
I’m considering purchasing this 17-inch Dell mobile workstation. I’m still unsure about the graphics card choice, as I’m particularly worried about heat management and its impact on the lifespan of both the graphics card and other components.
In my previous Dell Precision 7740, the Nvidia Quadro P4200 graphics card stopped working, so I switched to an Intel GPU after disabling that one. I wasn’t sure why it failed, but I suspect it might have been related to excessive heat due to its high TDP.
This time, I want a reliable PC with a modern GPU—something like the 8nm A3000 or A4000 series—to reduce heating issues. However, I’m a bit nervous about choosing the A4000 model because it has a higher TDP of 140 watts.
The A3000 model has a lower TDP of 70 watts, which seems more suitable for battery use and keeping temperatures down. I understand there’s a performance gap between these options, but I’m mainly concerned about long-term stability and heat control.
If you could share your thoughts, that would be really helpful!
Graphics cards may stop working for various reasons, including heat and electrical problems on the motherboard. While it might use less power, the performance drop is mainly due to reduced GPU output. In my opinion, upgrading the thermal paste and pads to better quality can help extend your laptop's life. Regular maintenance, checking if cooling vents are blocked, and ensuring you have the latest BIOS version are also beneficial practices.
If you're considering a laptop with a mobile processor from the last five years, they tend to overheat, no matter their TDP rating. Both Intel and AMD consider 100 Deg C normal today compared to what was seen a decade ago. This raises the question of what temperatures you're dealing with when your laptop overheats—if it's not thermal throttling, then it shouldn't be overheating.
I’m unsure why the graphics card failed, but I suspect it might be linked to its high TDP causing heat buildup. Have you considered swapping it for a similar one?

Upgrading Precision 7730 Laptop GPU (P4200 to newer GPU) | DELL Technologies
Thank you for the detailed feedback on the temperatures regarding the PC problems. For my previous laptop with the Quadro P4200 that failed, I’m not planning to replace the graphics card or make further modifications. Instead, I’m thinking about getting the precision 7760 with either the RTX A3000 or A4000. In your opinion, which of these two models is more likely to keep its internal components in good condition during heavy rendering tasks? Also, do you think using the A4000 might shorten my PC’s lifespan?
