I own an Asrock X370 Taichi motherboard. It has been upgraded to the latest BIOS recommended by the manufacturer, which supports 5k series CPUs. A 1700 socket is installed. Earlier attempts used a different kit (same brand, model, part number, timings) of 2x8GB GSkill FlareX RAM with CAS 14. It didn’t work well for memory training, would never boot until I returned to the original sticks, but it worked fine on the two new sticks in the original slots. I returned the kit a few years ago. From these experiences, it seems memory controller issues are common, possibly due to outdated designs, and the slots themselves might be faulty. Now I plan to install a 5800X. Reports suggest memory controllers and AGESA have improved significantly in recent generations. Should I try the same kit again, or should I opt for cheaper RAM and install a larger 2x16 or 2x32GB stick instead?

Purchase another 3200c14 kit or any similar part, like the 4400 19-19-19. It works fine unless you plan to push it beyond its limits, since the die can become ineffective if you don’t overclock properly. Its tight timing adjustments are especially useful for trfc.

If that doesn’t help, I’d lower the frequency to 3000 MHz. The 5800X offers a better controller, but performance also relies on the motherboard design and trace routing between memory slots and the CPU socket. Re-testing those sticks could be beneficial.

The first generation Ryzens were quite particular about the RAM, but the comment above suggests the chipset also plays a role, making it tough to be certain. Performance really boosted after Zen 2 came out. For better reliability, consider purchasing a new two-stick setup and replacing the old RAM. You might find the sweet spot at 3600 RAM, which seems similar in price to the 3200 model I checked earlier. If issues arise, you can still opt for a lower setting—3200 is a solid choice.
