From what I understand, you can't simply use the Windows 8.1 installation media with an existing Windows 8 key.

You can apply the same installation key to your new PC by following the setup instructions provided with it. This will allow you to transfer the license and install Windows there.

Thats a different issue entirely, and it might not even be possible it depends on the particular version of windows. if its a system builders/OEM you cant legally do it. If its the equivilent to a boxed version of windows you will have to wait for someone else to answer since I have never dealt with them, so I dunno the limitations/process of what you are trying to do.

Confirmed, I checked that information. You need to select the 8 installation media and then proceed with the free upgrade to version 8.1.

I'm not connecting with you. MacBooks lack keys for Windows. You're right about that. If this involves a key, I purchased one when it first came out. It wasn't included with any HP or Lenovo models.

It’s probable you’ll need to complete a phone activation.

Where does this system store Windows files for you to transfer them onto a USB drive and install on the rig?

I plan to switch to Windows 8.1 after installing it, but I won’t upgrade to Windows 10. I’ll rely on Microsoft to fix the issues.

There are two primary ...versions of Windows people usually encounter. One is a system builder/OEM license, which costs about a third of what it does in North America. It’s meant for building PCs from scratch, though alternatives exist. Once registered to a system, that’s about it. Boxed editions sold in stores tend to be more flexible regarding using the license on other devices, but I haven’t used one myself. I’ve only had system builder licenses or Windows 7/8 upgrades. If you have a key for what feels like a boxed copy, I’m not sure it will work. I believe it could, but I can’t guarantee it. If it’s a system builder license, you might need to contact Microsoft to get activation approved. From what you shared about using it for bootcamp on a Mac, there could be compatibility problems if it’s a system builder license.

Once completed, it will provide an opportunity to generate installation media: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windo...t-key-only
