Comparing the Z790 TOMAHAWK and Z790-A MAX reveals distinct differences in design and features.
MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK (non max) is priced around 310$, while the MSI PRO Z790-A MAX costs about 300$. Prices in my region are quite comparable. Both cards appear solid: the PRO model is a newer iteration, supports 7800MHz RAM, and offers 80A power delivery. The Tomahawk variant backs 7200MHz RAM with 90A power. I’m not an expert on motherboards, but these are the main distinctions I noticed. I already have a 2x32 6000MHz memory setup and a 14700K CPU, so I’m sticking to the standard configuration for stability.
It would be surprising to reach such a high speed with this board. In real life, I’d anticipate both reaching similar limits—around 7200MT/s if lucky, maybe 6800MT/s otherwise. The Tomahawk offers slightly improved VRM, which makes it my choice. However, in practice this difference probably won’t be significant, so you can focus on aesthetics if you’re buying by appearance. I’m also interested in other available options, as there may be better choices out there (like the Z690 Force, which is often considered a top value board, though the latest BIOS updates for the 14700K haven’t been ideal).
I also agree, I used this as an illustration, maybe it highlights the memory stability at lower frequencies, not sure. Of course, I’d look at any boards in this price range; according to reviews, MSI and Asus are the most reliable. Gigabytes are also great, though coil noise issues often arise (as I experience now), so I’m searching for a replacement. Z690 Force - 400$ locally, only noname shops. The only other options in this budget are Asus PRIME Z790-A and Asus TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS.
