I’d support the AMD chip because it would require significantly more cooling and airflow to manage the 250W power draw compared to the Intel setup.
Everyday tasks involve researching and writing, with roughly 20 to 40 browser tabs open on Brave (Chromium-based) simultaneously.
You’d likely need a lot more RAM rather than a top-end processor, in my opinion.
I'm planning to purchase a high-end dual tower CPU cooler no matter what the processor is. I've used the 14900K (modified to handle 150W, paired with an AXP90-120 cooler). I'm tired of the loud "bee" noise from small fans spinning at full speed.
Do you think the 9800x3d remains a better value even after applying Intel's 50% discount?
Like many YouTube videos, there can be some differences that aren't entirely fair. I’m sure the 9800x3d is still a strong choice overall, but that doesn’t mean the 285k isn’t worth considering.
I think a chip like the 9070xt wouldn’t show a big difference in gaming right now. Depending on your other requirements, the 285k might fit you better and its lower price makes it more attractive.
The main drawback is that once you’re in the Intel Core line, there won’t be a clear upgrade path if needed. The AM5 platform will likely support at least another generation of processors soon.
Do you have any specific needs from the motherboard? Things like wireless support, M2 SSD slots, PCIe versions, or USB?
I’m not very familiar with Bazzite since it’s a Linux-based version, so I assume it would favor AMD graphics more for compatibility. I’m not sure how the efficiency cores perform in such software, so leave it to the experts.
Thanks. I don't know - it seems like the differences aren't as large as they used to be when the chips first released, if they exist at all. At least,according to this video. I read about a very recent BIOS upgrade that boosted performance, wondering if it has anything to do with his numbers. I found another video where the 285K beat the 9800x3d consistently in 4K gaming (native), but this is the first one where it also showed some superiority in lower resolutions as well. I'm never upgrading my computers Just selling them after about two years, and getting another i9 for 50% off ^^. The resale value is very high. As for requirements, well, probably going to be a MiniITX or MicroATX, i like smaller cases. One M2 drive is enough. Did GEN5 NVMEs become mainstream yet, or is Gen4 still the default? Probably going to have a 9070XT (or a new Intel Battlemage if they release some high-end card in the near future, I can get them too for a discount, although not as big as the CPU's), a 2TB nvme, and that's it. I never use wireless for any device other than the phones. BazziteOS is a fork of Fedora, optimized for gaming. Comes with Steam, etc out of the box, and with all drivers for GPUs and controllers baked in. PS - the 285K does better in Linux than Windows ^^
