So Im pretty sure the 3600 outperforms the 2700x in most places except it has 2 more cores. I read somewhere that 8 core 16 thread cpus are most likely going to be better for longevity mainly because the new consoles will have 8 core 16 thread therefore game devs working with 8 core 16 thread more, or maybe even springing for the 3700x for the 8 cores. Basically is what I read just crap or is that really something to look into

Choose 3600 for a pure gaming setup; opt for 2700X if you're primarily using it for productivity tasks.

The new PlayStation 5 uses 8-core/16-thread Ryzen CPUs and Navi graphics. It's likely future game engines will run more efficiently. For now, I'd choose the 3600 over the 2700x—it feels much smoother. If you don't plan to upgrade soon, go with the 3700x.

At that cost it's tough to beat—raising FPS with a 3600 would be better than the 2700 non-x model right now. Keep in mind, if you're playing at 1440P or higher or have an RTX 2060 Super or lower, you won't see much change between these CPUs.

I'm planning to build my PC over several months so I always have the latest CPU. The advice I've received has shifted my thoughts now. As a 16-year-old about to start working, I don't have any bills, and my parents have a car ready for me. Still, I'm saving money in general. With these conditions, I'm unsure whether to go for an 8-core or a 6-core processor for gaming at 1080p144hz, especially since I'm also taking graphic design classes.

If you can afford it, get the 3700x. It should last about three years in the PC market, and upcoming consoles will use 8 cores and 16 threads with the same architecture.
