Currently my nearby store offers the 9700K for $429 and the 3600X for $299. At $130 you could upgrade significantly with other parts in the setup. A larger SSD, improved cooling solution, next-gen graphics card, faster RAM—depends on your goals. If I were building a desktop myself, I’d pick the 3600X and invest the rest in a top-tier GPU. Gaming performance with a faster CPU versus a better GPU is clear. If you’re focusing on value, pairing it with a 3080, high-end cooler, NVMe drive, and mid-to-high tier board makes sense. The 9700K shines when you already have premium components to complement it.
The setup costs vary depending on the region and configuration. While price isn’t my main focus, I’ve noticed a shift in preferences. Previously, I favored the 3600x over the 9700k, but recent updates have made the latter more appealing for upcoming titles. Speed differences matter—8/8 threads help with older games, while 6/12 offers better multitasking for future releases. Console specs are also changing; once they were expected at 8/16, now higher frequencies are common. This affects performance across different titles, making it hard to generalize which chip will be more limited.
I don't like the 9700k because of business practices; it felt unfair since Intel has always offered hyperthreading. I'm unsure if having more threads in a 6/12 chip matters compared to an 8-core chip with fewer threads. Generally, SMT or HT can boost performance by about 25% depending on the workload. A 6x1.25 gives around 7.5 cores while 8x1 gives 8 full cores. Some applications benefit from HT/SMT, others don't. Performance varies—some games improve, others don't. Even though I don't like the product, it would be a better choice than the 3600 without a big price gap. AMD's PCIE4 could also help.
