Comparing Lenovo Legion 5 and 5 Pro (screen or power)
Comparing Lenovo Legion 5 and 5 Pro (screen or power)
Hi everyone, I'm facing a choice and would appreciate some advice to help me decide.
I'm considering two Lenovo Legion gaming laptops from 2021:
1) Lenovo Legion 5 - Ryzen 7 5800 - RTX 3070 - 16GB RAM - 512GB SSD
Screen: 15.6", 1080p, 165Hz, 300nits, 16:9 ratio
Price: £1,115
2) Lenovo Legion 5i Pro - i7-11800H, RTX 3060, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
Screen: 16", 2560x1600p, 500nits, 16:10 ratio, 165Hz
Price: £1,254
The difference is about £140.
On one side the Legion 5 has a cheaper RTX 3070 but a lower-resolution screen, while the 5i Pro offers a better display with higher brightness and more RAM, though its GPU is weaker.
I'm planning to play demanding games with RTX and likely use DLSS.
What are your thoughts? Maybe someone knows which one suits you better?
I own an RTX 3070 myself, and I believe the real point where returns start to fade for mobile RTX 30XX models lies between the RTX 3070 and RTX 3080/Ti, unless you need a 16GB of VRAM. The latter tends to be pricier and doesn’t always offer much more power because of thermal limits in most typical laptops. That said, a 140W RTX 3070 should deliver roughly 20-25% better performance compared to a 130W RTX 3060, based on reviews and benchmarks. It hasn’t let me down with my current setup, especially when running MW5 at 2.5K with ray tracing and DLSS enabled.

The Ryzen 7 5800H also outperforms the i7-11800H in multi-core tasks and runs cooler, though its single-core performance is a bit lower.
I’d suggest choosing the 5800H paired with the RTX 3070 if you can find it at a good price, or go for the 3070 if that’s not feasible. Check out a few more reviews before making your final decision.
Thanks for the response, yes definitely I'd prefer the Ryzen 5 pro with the RX 3070, but it's currently unavailable and the price is about £1,400 plus. My original idea was to opt for the RX 3070 5 Pro version, though with the lower price of the regular Legion 5, I thought maybe a downgrade in the display could save around £300.
Now both laptops listed in the thread are sold out, including the 5i Pro and Legion models. Perhaps I should wait until April for any sales or when the Ryzen 5 pro version becomes available, which might lower the cost. But if it doesn't come to that, is it worth paying the extra £300 for a better screen? (The AMD 5 Pro RX 3070?)
It could be a different story if the discounted price disappears. Also, comparing the 5i Pro RX 3060 with the Ryzen RX 3070 shows only a £150 difference.
I've read many reviews, which is why I thought of asking here 😂
