There aren't any major variations between the two models for a 10600k. The extra cost for gamingx seems justified. The memory details in the UD are a bit unclear, but the specs match what you'd expect from Gigabyte.

It's unusual to see i5/i3 models with such restrictions—either they're locked at a specific limit or described incorrectly, as this hasn't been observed before for any other motherboard.

Not exactly how it works, let me clarify. The CPU and board meet standard speeds of up to 2667MHz. The board also supports XMP rated sticks up to 4400MHz (approximately). Yes, the board can handle all processors from the largest to the smallest. I3, I5, I7, and I9 processors are all compatible. Check the "CPU support list" on the website for detailed information about each CPU and its corresponding BIOS version. That should help!

The specifications for i3/i5 models are 2666mhz, while i7/i9 models reach 2933mhz. Going beyond these values is essentially an overclock. On non-Z boards, you can't exceed those frequencies, so they stay at the maximum. On Z boards, any CPU generally works within limits (up to IMC restrictions) at speeds above these numbers, but it's considered an overclock. Thus, on non-Z boards, memory performance is capped at 2666 for i3/i5 and 2933 for i7/i9. You can match your i5 with any compatible RAM speed, and it should function at rated rates on a Z board.
