Comparing 3700x OC vs 9600k OC for gaming
Hi there,
Just checking if an i5 9600k OC or a r7 3700x OC would be better for gaming. I'm planning to play GTA V, Hitman 2, and Tom Clancy games at 4K 60Hz with 2080p resolution.
At 4K resolution they will look almost the same. But the i5 will run much more intensely. I chose the 3700X instead of an i7 9700k, and even better than a 9600k.
There won't be any necessity to overclock the 3700x—it'll perform adequately with a decent cooler or, if required, just use PBO. The 9600k will also suffice for now...but it won't last nearly as long as the 3700x, which also benefits from at least one additional full product release for AM4 sockets.
At 4K60 gaming performance remains consistent, yet the Ryzen offers significantly better speed for other activities. It includes two additional cores and ten more threads. Upcoming titles will take advantage of these features, making the 3700X a stronger choice for the future.
Choose the 3700X. As others noted, this AM4 model is compatible with Ryzen 4000, allowing you to upgrade for enhanced performance and core count in the long run.
Edit: For gaming purposes, the 2080S is ideal, but if you plan to run tough games such as AC Odyssey and RDR2, a 2080 Ti is recommended along with some GPU overclocking to achieve 4K60. I still maintain a minimum of 30 FPS in AC Odyssey at 4K60 using a 2080 Ti running at 2070Mhz Core and 2000Mhz MEM.
