Hey everyone, I'm planning to film my desktop screen using a camera input through a capture card, with chroma keying done via OBS. I'm only doing this locally, not streaming anything online. I'll be working with graphic design software, not games, and I'm using a Ryzen 3700X CPU with a GTX 1650 SUPER card. My main concern is whether 32GB of storage will be enough for recording and encoding, possibly even re-encoding videos. Would 16GB suffice? Thanks a lot, Roy.

We have the right amount. The r7 3700x and 1650 super sound like an unusual pairing, but I’m curious where you came up with that idea. Still, 16GB works fine.

I just wanted a solid CPU and prefer AMD more. From what I noticed, the Ryzen 3700X offers great value, and the GTX 1650 SUPER works well for video encoding thanks to its new NVENC encoder. Does this setup have any issues? Thanks!

The 1650 super seems questionable for gamers since a CPU that’s more expensive than the GPU isn’t ideal. For encoding, it works fine for a single machine, but I’d recommend the 1660 with 6GB of RAM instead, offering slightly better performance and more memory. Regarding extra RAM, it’s not necessary now—OBS doesn’t demand much beyond 16GB. However, some background tasks could use more memory, so consider an NVME SSD for faster storage. Video data is processed in RAM before being written to the disk, and older hard drives can slow everything down.

Guidance on high-speed encoders is only valuable if you're in the same price range or slightly upgraded cards. Ultimately, performance matters, and options like the 1660 super or 2060 could be superior. For SSDs, large files perform better with a professional NVMe drive, thanks to cache support and efficient sequential read/write handling. Smaller files will reach around 550MB/s, but video data won't see meaningful gains from cheaper alternatives.

You appreciated the suggestions well. I’ve adjusted the GPU to 1660 Super but used 16GB instead of the original amount. This reduced costs significantly. I’m planning to test this setup and upgrade further if needed. Currently, I’ll handle basic editing and video trimming, adding titles in a program I’m still deciding on—possibly Davinci Resolve. It would be good to check if maximizing RAM performance helps, or if having 32GB right away offers more benefit. Thanks for your support!

The positive aspect of RAM is that you can always increase its capacity. You can replace these sections whenever needed, though RAM remains the most affordable and straightforward option.

I don’t see a need for an upgraded graphics card since his tasks won’t require it. The 1650S should suffice for most design software, and it shares the same encoder as the entire Turing line. Any improvement over it—like a 2080—would only offer around 10% more performance at best.
