I'm working on an old Dell Vostro 400 and installed Windows 8.1, which is fine so far. However, I'm considering upgrading because of compatibility issues. There are no 64-bit drivers available for it—only 4GB or DDR2 RAM and a 64-bit processor. I was thinking about switching to Windows 7, but again, no drivers exist there. I’m wondering what version and bit architecture would offer the best compatibility. With a Radeon HD 6850 graphics card, Vista 32-bit seems like a good fit. Hope this is the right path—I’d love your advice! :

It also supports Vista drivers, which is why I'm thinking about it.

There need to be support options for Windows 8.1, it's not obvious they're missing

for the motherboard there isn't much compatibility, just like with the graphics card. It’s another challenge—it won’t work properly with 8.1. Since it’s an older Dell model, it only supports LGA 775 core 2 duo. The issue is that it only has Vista and XP 32-bit drivers available; Windows 7 isn’t supported at all. It’s been a while since I even checked for 7 or Vista.

I think Vista software usually functions on Windows 7 and 8, but I'm uncertain about 64-bit compatibility. It might be best to install a 32-bit version of Windows 7 first before purchasing it and check if the drivers operate correctly.

Benji has the right point. Vista drivers work on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. You can find your fix there.
