Compare Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 for a clearer understanding of their differences.
I've been using a Windows 8 laptop for several years and actually favor it more than Windows 7, even when I first got it! I've been waiting to upgrade to 8.1 since it's been stable and there aren't any significant issues or fixes in that version. Now I'm putting together my first high-end PC after years of laptop use. I can choose either Windows 8 or 8.1 for free through Dreamspark (as an engineering student). Is there any solid reason I haven't upgraded to 8.1? Mainly about performance and bug fixes over new features? Also, I don't use any apps much, so it's not a big deal.
It doesn't really matter. You'll likely need to switch to Windows 10 soon if you want to use DirectX 12. Keep in mind that AMD no longer backs Windows 8 with the newest drivers. The site will push you to an outdated version if you stay on Windows 8. It's not that old, just not the latest. If you want to run newer titles such as GTA V or Witcher 3, you'll be limited to Windows 8.1. I believe Nvidia still assists with Windows 8, but that's probably not something you need to worry about. I haven't owned an Nvidia graphics card since the GeForce 2 64 MB, so it's important to choose the appropriate operating system based on your card. Personally, Windows 8.1 runs just as smoothly as Windows 8.
Typically people say only Windows 8.1 and 7 support version 10, while Windows 8 was really poor compared to that.
I understand 8.1 isn’t a brand-new operating system, but it’s a major update. I’m just curious about the changes and whether there’s anything important for me to know before upgrading. Since Windows 8 includes 8.1 for free, could I upgrade to Windows 10? How would that work? I’ve been searching and the only updates mentioned are about apps. Also, since I use NVIDIA, the AMD drivers shouldn’t be an issue.
