The variation would be nearly imperceptible. They could both perform sluggishly on a traditional hard drive.

Xubuntu could be a good choice for an older machine. It’s ideal for experimenting without spending money on premium hardware.

You're running smoothly on a Core 2 Duo with just 4GB RAM and an SSD, but the HDD is slowing things down. Upgrading to an SSD would be a good move to boost performance.

Win10 should work without issues. It’s not that outdated—my setup includes a first-gen Core-i machine running Win10 and another C2Q system using WinVista, which is expected to transition to Win10 soon.
