I'm using a Dell spare laptop with a 3rd gen I5 processor, 6GB DDR3 RAM. Ubuntu 18.04 works perfectly there. If you'd like changes, you can adjust things like the keyboard backlight settings in Ubuntu. The system is running smoother and the battery life has improved significantly.

I suggest avoiding windows and Ubuntu based on my experience. Ubuntu tends to be quite unstable, particularly after upgrading from 17.04 to 18.04. I’d recommend considering other Linux distributions instead, since nearly all Debian-based systems should be comparable to Ubuntu and you won’t run into major issues. Still, Ubuntu remains more stable than Windows 10 for me, but BSODs are a persistent problem.

ElementaryOS seems promising with positive feedback as well. I tested version 0.4.1 Loki, but the latest release is V5.0 Juno, which appears to be significantly improved. You can find more details on ElementaryOS.

I've never experienced any issues with battery performance or touchpad functionality on Linux.
