I’m setting up my first PC and it runs the 12th generation processor. I’m unsure if I should get a Windows 11 license or upgrade from Windows 10. I’ve used Windows 10 before but not 11, and I wonder if Windows 10 still receives updates. Also, are they still offering security updates for Windows 10?
W10 will remain available through at least 2025, making it the best choice for your needs. Right now I’m using version 10 on my work laptop, 11 on my personal machine, and MacOS on my M1 Air. So far, nothing unusual has happened with W11, but I expect some compatibility issues to persist because 10 is still widely used.
For a gaming-oriented PC, Hardware Unboxed conducted a benchmark comparing Windows 10 and 11 in games. The results showed no benefit from Windows 11’s enhanced scheduler in that context. Personally, I’d prefer sticking with version 10.
Windows 10 remains under updates currently. It’s best to stay on Windows 10 now, with a plan to move to Windows 11 later. I recently switched to Windows 11 (fresh install), but some work programs and apps have issues. For gaming, I suggest Windows 11. To date, my games in Windows 11 have run smoothly. Note: My titles include GTAV, World War Z, L4D2, and Forza Horizon 4. My setup is a Windows 10 PC for professional use and a Windows 11 PC for entertainment.

The user interface still feels underdeveloped at present, though upcoming changes promise significant upgrades. Compared to Windows 10, this version offers a clear leap forward. Windows 10 has become somewhat outdated in terms of visual appeal, but it retains a certain character. On the other hand, Windows 11 introduces much-needed uniformity. Unfortunately, this consistency can draw attention to older versions that lack modern polish. The next release in October/November will address many minor issues and bring substantial enhancements. Overall, whether you value these improvements depends on your priorities.
