The i3 4100m is still functional but may feel slow now. Upgrading to an i5 4200m could boost performance significantly. Adding more RAM from 4 to 8 and switching to an SSD will further improve speed and efficiency. Since your laptop is nearly seven years old with a basic build, these changes should make it more reliable and responsive.

It really comes down to the price. Upgrading the RAM is a solid move, but the CPU isn’t a major upgrade opportunity. I own a laptop with an i5; it’s decent overall, but I wouldn’t upgrade it from a 4100MHz clock speed.

They both operate at identical base clock speeds, with matching cores and threads. Upgrading the CPU isn't justified.
