For your NVMe boot drive, the best option is a high-performance SSD with fast read/write speeds and reliable reliability.

The M.2 connections near the CPU are slightly superior to those passing through the chipset. However, if you plan to upgrade to a higher-quality M.2 drive or use an older SSD, preserving the CPU slots might be beneficial. Some boards also limit PCIe lanes by including CPU M.2 ports. Which board do you own? Please share your CPU model and M.2 drive, as capabilities can differ across generations and help us provide the best guidance.

Mostly it runs straight to the CPU, but if you have a few boards that take over PCIe lanes from the main x16 port for your M.2 slot, you should use another port. The difference is usually minor in real use.
