Hello, I'm setting up a new rig and need help picking the right processor. Should I choose the 11th gen Core i7-11700K or the Core I9 10850K? The main tasks will involve gaming and video rendering.

The reason is that the cost variation is minimal at just 30 USD.

Typically, Core i7 chips have six to eight cores, while i9 CPUs come with at least eight. The key distinction lies in Hyper-Threading, which we will discuss later. ... These high-end workstation chips can reach up to 18 cores.

The i7-11700K offers better performance over time thanks to its newer chipset. At userbenchmark.net, the i5-11600K performs similarly to the i9-10900K, with only the core count differing.

Instead of focusing only on CPUs, consider options like 5800x or 10850k for better performance. For your specific needs, a higher-end model would be preferable over the 11700k.

MeatSink doesn’t provide a solid justification for choosing 10850k over 11700k. I still support getting the former, as it typically offers more overclocking potential and solid performance in most current titles when matched with a strong GPU (like a 2070 Super or higher, or 2080/2080 Super and newer Ampere models such as the 3060Ti, 3080). The latter tends to run hot and delivers underwhelming results overall.

Choose the 11th generation (i7 11700k) if you must use Intel. Be aware it requires power and a solid cooler.
