Also note that the number of transistors isn't the only factor to consider
You already own the 5800XT. Don’t even consider purchasing a 5800X3D. Opt for your Radeon 9070 XT, cut costs, and enjoy fresh games with your current GPU. The main upgrade option available at the moment is the AM5 X3D.
It's about how doubling transistor counts impacts performance, not just the 3D V-Cache advantage.
I own an Radeon RX 9070 X and already know it would take me a while to scoundrell money for AM5. I bought a Ryzen 7 5700X just because it was affordable, then got a second GPU for double the price. After using a 6-core CPU for some time, I considered upgrading to an 8-core CPU. I think a Ryzen 7 7xx is sufficient for gaming and more budget-friendly than the Ryzen 9 5900X.
AM5 X3D is the main upgrade option for you. I didn’t suggest jumping straight to a 9800X3D like that. For 1440p and 4K gaming, the 5800XT remains quite solid. Just enjoy what you have and keep playing your games. Your setup still performs well.
It's clear I had an RTX 3070 with 8GB VRAM and upgrading to the RX 9070 X gave a noticeable boost. However, when switching to AM5, I'm looking for 3DX2 tech. My friend just got an AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D for 1080p gaming with an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, which really helped. My current system only has a RAM speed of CL18, not CL16, heheh.
Absolutely! Having 8GB of VRAM for 1440p and 4k gaming isn’t enough today if you want top performance. I got a 16GB RTX 4080 in 2022, and it still works great even after three years—thanks to heavy overclocking that keeps it competitive with a stock 5080. This is the best GPU investment I’ve made. If you’re planning ahead, you might want to start saving for Zen 6 around late 2026 or early 2027, depending on when you upgrade your CPU.
I’m planning to purchase an AM5 later once they release the AM6. I hope there’s a price drop and I can give my old rig to my wife. My friend has an RTX 4090 that’s really struggling, so I did some work with his GTX 3070 gaming X OC v2, getting it for full price. I paid because I had the three-year warranty, but when I returned it saying it was faulty, they gave me a full refund.
