I've been considering upgrading my old gaming PC from about five years ago. Many of us dream of running a high-end threadripper, but those are expensive for most people. I believe a first-generation 1900X could be worth around $200 or more. My main question is whether it's worth the investment for a "slow/old" threadripper or if spending that same amount on a modern R5 3600 would be better. The only clear differences are the extra two cores on the 1900X, but it also has a much higher TDP.
The $300+ motherboard for Threadripper paired with a subpar CPU is justified for most users because it ensures stability and compatibility, even when paired with less powerful processors. This setup prioritizes reliability over raw performance, making it suitable for everyday tasks and light workloads without frequent upgrades.
The reasoning is no. Just because I have access to the TR 2990wx doesn't mean it's the best choice; I upgraded to the R9 3950x for better performance. Over time, technology improves across generations. The 2990wx has evolved into a server now.
