Your 2011 Mac Mini is running Catalina 10.15.5, which is quite old. The Dosdude patch pushed it to Catalina, but you're stuck because you can't upgrade to the latest iMovie. Comparing this to newer Linux distros like Elementary 6 shows a big difference in features and updates—Elementary offers modern apps, better security, and regular support, while your setup is limited by age and compatibility issues.

Consider trying a dual boot setup yourself. Linux won’t solve the iMovie problem, and the video editing experience on Linux isn’t very impressive right now.

Consider DaVinci Resolve as an alternative to iMovie. It’s free, comprehensive, and works without needing Big Sur.

I can attest to Resolve. I manage a YouTube channel with more than 5 million views, and I usually work in Premiere, though I’ve switched to Resolve recently—it’s clearly the top free editing tool available.

Consider sticking with MacOS and using Resolve or Resolve on Linux. It’s safe to say that after Catalina, security concerns have increased.

On Catalina it's fine. Upgrading isn't necessary. The main tether machine is still working with Mojave.
