I'm starting my first PC build with a budget around $1000 CAD. I'm considering the Gigabyte B450M DS3H or the ASRock B450M PRO4 motherboards, both offering similar pricing and features. My plan is to install a Ryzen 5 2600 CPU and overclock it. The ports look comparable, so I'm unsure which one is better. Do anyone have experience with these models? What would you suggest? Are there other options I should know about? Your feedback would be appreciated.
The Asrock offers improved performance at a more reasonable price point, especially when it comes to overclocking. GB features a VRM with four phases and includes one high-voltage and two low-voltage MOSFETs per phase, totaling eight components. However, the design is somewhat outdated, uses average-quality components, and has lower efficiency and current handling. In contrast, the Asrock’s VRM contains only three phases but incorporates two high-voltage and two low-voltage MOSFETs per phase, resulting in six MOSFETs overall. These are superior to GB’s setup and produce less heat due to a more even temperature distribution across the chip. The cooling fins on the Asrock also perform better than GB’s.
The PCIe layout on the Asrock is more advantageous—PCIe X1 slots can accommodate a graphics card directly above them, whereas GB’s configuration limits this flexibility. Additionally, the Asrock provides six USB 3 ports, including one USB 3.0 port at 10 Gbps, while GB offers only four USB 3 ports but two USB 2.0 options. The board also includes two M.2 connectors, enhancing connectivity compared to GB’s setup.
Regarding storage, the Asrock supports DVI, VGA, and HDMI outputs, whereas GB has just two USB 3 ports and two USB 2.0 ports. GB also lacks any 10 Gbps USB ports, which the Asrock offers. Overall, the Asrock board delivers better value, superior cooling, and more versatile connectivity.
